For synagogue executive directors, clergy, and other leaders and professionals who are responsible for synagogue communication and outreach

Based on Sarah Durham's book Brandraising: How to Raise Money and Increase Visibility through Smart Communications, this seminar will challenge you to think about what’s unique about your synagogue and why someone should be interested in joining your congregation. You’ll hear about ways to create the kind of compelling message that expresses the personality of your synagogue, attracts new members, and takes your synagogue to the next level. With the proper messaging in place, you’ll better understand the tools you need to communicate online and off and ensure your synagogue team is speaking with one voice. You’ll also hear about how other synagogues and Jewish organizations have used brandraising techniques to reposition themselves in a fresh modern way.

Attention MetroASE members. Please select the “mail in check” option when registering, and the cost of the program will be covered by MetroASE.  A lunch meeting for MetroASE members is scheduled for 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., and members should R.S.V.P. for the meeting directly to MetroASE.

Sarah Durham is principal and founder of Big Duck, a communications firm that works exclusively with nonprofits. Clients include local, regional, national, and international organizations, including Jewish organizations such as the Foundation for Jewish Camp, American Jewish World Service, The Jewish Education Project and several synagogues. She was named a top fundraiser under 40 by Fundraising Success Magazine in 2006, and one of the most influential women in technology by Fast Company magazine in 2010.

For synagogue executive directors, administrators, office managers and others wearing multiple hats

As a synagogue executive, in any given day, you might arrange for a delivery, set up chairs, lead a meeting, welcome a newcomer, mediate a disagreement, celebrate a simcha, or arrange for a funeral. And, in fulfilling these functions, you relate to lots of different types of people--staff, clergy, congregants, the synagogue president and board members, vendors, and others. Your job requires the utmost flexibility to respond to unpredictable daily occurrences, and yet you need to remain focused to meet the goals of your job in a timely fashion. In this interactive and enjoyable workshop, you'll have an opportunity to develop your mental focus and adaptability skills using improvisational techniques.

A light breakfast is served from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., and the program begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. Cost: $40. MetroASE members.

Marc Spear is a former executive director of a large synagogue, so he understands the day-to-day challenges that synagogue executive directors and administrators face. Currently, he serves as the senior director of student life at Yeshiva University, and previous director of leadership development at Yeshiva’s Center for the Jewish Future. He has an MBA and is well-versed in organizational management strategy and improvisational theater techniques. He infuses his training and facilitations in leadership, communications, team-building and other topics with creativity and practical application.
